So the Firefox attempt at the Guiness World Record for the highest number of downloads in a single day is complete! And not too shabby, at over eight million downloads -- that's a lot of browsers! Hopefully at least some of those went to people that are currently mired in the Hell of Internet Explorer. Anything which gets users away from the mess that is IE 7 is good for me and my business.
You can see their nice interactive flash map, tracking Firefox downloads by country, here. And, of course, you can learn more about the best browser on the net at Spread Firefox!
I did have a bit of a panic when I saw that the version of Firebug I had installed wasn't compatible with Firefox 3, until I actually read the page and saw there was a new version. Firebug (with Yslow) has become a critical part of my web workflow, and without that, I'd be in for lots of extra work.
Firefox 3 is really exciting for a number of reasons, including:
- An improved add-on manager that even lets you disable third party plugins like Flash and Quicktime -- a nice boon to our Slashdot friends
- A better download manager, which allows you to search in your recent downloads, as well as timestamps them
- Massively improved performance, both in terms of CPU use and memory management - it does seem snappier, but I'll really have to push it before I know for sure
